If you find yourself wandering the picturesque streets of Takayama, Japan, make sure to carve out some time to visit Hida Gyuman Honpo, a delightful cafe that specializes in the artful creation of nikuman—steamed buns that promise to delight your taste buds. Nestled in the charming neighborhood of 上二之町, this local gem not only serves up a taste of Japan's culinary heritage but does so in a cozy atmosphere that invites you to savor every bite.

The cafe’s specialty lies in its Hida beef buns, which are impeccably crafted and filled with a variety of delightful ingredients. One beloved option is the sukiyaki bun, described by customer Michael米王 as “yummy” and a perfect representation of flavorful Japanese cuisine. Each bun is excitingly warm to the touch, with a light, fluffy exterior that gives way to a meltingly tender filling. The blend of savory flavors, especially in the pumpkin bun praised by Sarah Campeau, creates a delicious symphony that is hard to resist.

While some patrons, like Catherine Tan, have wished for a bit more in terms of ingredients, others such as Danielle Balandra and liberator48 seem to disagree, celebrating the accessibility and taste of the offerings. Each bun, priced around ¥500, embodies the essence of Japanese street food—simple yet profoundly satisfying.

The inviting atmosphere of Hida Gyuman Honpo is just as appealing as the snacks it serves. With a warm and friendly ambiance, patrons can enjoy their buns in a casual setting that encourages relaxation and conversation. Please note that the cafe opens at 9:30 AM, as confirmed by enthusiastic locals, defying the outdated Google listing. It’s definitely a delightful stop for a mid-morning snack to revive your spirit as you explore the captivating city of Takayama.

Whether you are a tourist seeking authentic bites or a local searching for a satisfying treat, Hida Gyuman Honpo represents the heart of culinary craftsmanship in the region. With its charming locale and delicious offerings, this cafe promises not just a meal, but a memorable experience wrapped in a fluffy bun.

Much better nikuman than at the morning market. Don't get there, get here. Be aware though, they open at 9:30 and not at 9 as Google currently says.

These buns are not as tasty as we thought they would be. Wished there were more ingredients. One for ¥500.

Grabbed a pumpkin bun on the go. It was scrumptious, savory and a little sweet and warm but not too hot. Thanks for a perfect snack!

Not sure what the other reviews are complaining about. It was an easy transaction, and we found the buns to be tasty.

Hida beef buns served with different ingredients inside, including sukiyaki one I tried. Yummy.

We had the beef and beef and cheese steamed buns. Both full of beefy, onion flavor. Many times, steamed buns are disappointing or, at best, forgettable, but these were fantastic! Note this is a street food window, but there are a couple city benches nearby.
